One “Red Pilled” Catholic to Another

Red Pill
noun

Used to refer to a process by which a person’s perspective is dramatically transformed, introducing them to a new and typically disturbing understanding of the true nature of a particular situation.

Countless Catholics realize things “aren’t right” in the Church and are not getting any real insights from their parish or diocese. I live in one of those dioceses. In 2018, my circumstances prompted me to seek outside my local resources and find out as much as I could about the initial scandal that sprung forth in what has become known as the Catholic “Summer of Shame.” I have been investigating the problems in our Church ever since. My “Red Pill” experience comes one dose after another. The following post is what I came across in my first few months…

The Night My Eyes Were Opened

In August 2018, I received an email from a Catholic organization about a horrible Catholic Church crisis. I was stunned upon learning of the enormous mess happening in Pennsylvania concerning Catholic priests and sexual abuse cases there. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court made public one of the broadest-ever investigations into Catholic clerical sex abuse of minors in the United States. The document, a 1,400-page grand jury report, named at least 300 priests accused of child sex abuse by more than 1,000 victims throughout the state. My shock deepened upon learning Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the most influential Vatican official in America, was stripped of his post following numerous accusations of sex abuse from both adult seminarians and children. Not knowing much about him, I Googled his name. I found a letter written by young Catholic professionals respectfully demanding some answers from our bishops on a website called First Things. Thus began my launch into fact-finding.

“Archbishop McCarrick’s predatory career would not have been possible without the culpable silence or active complicity of men at the highest levels of the Church. Revelations of his abuse have therefore gravely damaged the credibility of the whole Catholic hierarchy. Here a group of young Catholics speaks with one voice about the need for a cleansing fire. Their statement is non-partisan, assuming nothing but the eternal validity of the Church’s teaching.” – First Things, August 8, 2018

My first insight into the crisis is an excellent place to start if you are just getting started.  Read the following link:

The Viganò Letters

On August 26th, in an open letter first published by Lifesite News and National Catholic Register, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who served as nuncio to the United States from 2011-2016, wrote his first letter of testimony about the corruption of the hierarchy of the Church. Lifesite News said:

“In an extraordinary 11-page written statement (see official English text below), Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, 77, claims that Pope Francis knew about strict canonical sanctions imposed on McCarrick by Pope Benedict XVI but chose to repeal them…”

(While at Lifesite News, you can also put Viganò Letter in their “Search” window and come up with so many articles.  One sure way to learn more about the early stages of the storm that hit the Church in August of 2018.)

The Archbishop Viganò testimony is shocking, and sadly none can disprove it. In fact, as many in the hierarchy deride him, information comes out vindicating Viganò.   He has published a few more letters and given minimal interviews. Currently, Viganò is in hiding and tells the truth about the current crisis in our Church. (Archbishop V is still in hiding as of this posting of this archive article. NM 12/4/2020)

Finding the Links

By now, I was in shell shock.  I quit editing my book or doing any work on my websites.  I grieved deeply for those wronged, and grieve deeply for our Catholic people who have been living with a system of lies.  Then I found a link somewhere that led to Complicit Clergy.  It was full of articles coming from many different sources and calls to action.  It was there that I first learned about Church Militant, another resource for Catholic truth.

I did lots of reading, but I also watched podcasts and videos available online. I read comments at the end of many articles and found the writers shared the frustration and shock of other Catholics from all over.  Very few Catholics around me were searching for the truth.   Mostly, I prayed.

Trusted resources had something in common – deep faith. Sound theology that goes way back in our Church teaching to the very roots of our faith.  Dr. Taylor Marshall is a teacher at heart. Since summer 2018, I have been watching his podcasts. I find up to date information, insights, and sometimes a good chuckle from Dr. Marshall and usually his partner in following current events, Timothy Gordon. ((Since I first wrote this post in 2018, Timothy has started his own blog Rules 4 Retrogrades – be sure to visit!) These two introduced me to the term “Red Pill.” If you have read Archbishop Viganò’s letter, this video will be especially interesting to you, and an introduction to two good resources on the internet Taylor Marshall and Timothy Gordon on St Gallen Mafia & Pope Francis: What is it?

A Hard Pill to Sallow

Archbishop Viganò’s first testimony set me searching through the internet looking for a Catholic response. In the process, I gained more and more access to Catholic news and blogs and more secular outlets. I became aware the uncovering of such vile sexual crimes against our children and seminarians was not only a hard pill to swallow but just the beginning of understanding the real state of affairs in our Church across the world.

Honestly, this is how I became a “Red Pilled” Catholic concerning the scandal that rocked the Catholic Church during the summer and fall of 2018. It didn’t take long to realize that dependable resources were outside the box of my diocese. A few parish priests spoke out, but the diocese was extremely careful.

If all of this is new to you, keep searching. I’ve given you useful resources. If you know someone who is just realizing all is not right in Dodge, aka Rome, as the Summer of Shame began revealing in 2018 (and idolatry in the Vatican Gardens further revealed in Fall of 2019) please share this post! For those of you who are up to date, stay tuned. This blog site is newly back up and running. I’m laying a foundation for the droves of Catholics who are not going to be able to ignore the visible much longer.

God bless you always,

Nancy M
